America’s Hall of Shame- Rex Rammell

BOISE, Idaho — An Idaho Republican gubernatorial hopeful insists he was only joking when he said he'd buy a license to hunt President Barack Obama.

Rex Rammell, a long-shot candidate slated to run against incumbent C.L. "Butch" Otter in the May 2010 GOP primary, made the comment at a Republican rally Tuesday in Twin Falls where talk turned to the state's planned wolf hunt, for which hunters must purchase an $11.50 wolf tag. The hunt is due to begin on Tuesday.

When an audience member shouted a question about "Obama tags," Rammell responded, "The Obama tags? We'd buy some of those."

Rammell told The Associated Press Thursday he sees no reason to apologize for the comment because it was just a joke.

More Wacky Turkish Postcards- Catch of the Day!

Fisherman's delight

Looks like this Turkish stud has his hands full! Check out those bell-bottoms. He is showing quite a bit more cleavage that his date. The pose is precarious and there is the suspense of imminent disaster (splash and kerplunk and another holiday ruined)

Waiting for the Izmir Metro.. and waiting.. and waiting

SP_A0007

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERA            GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERA After waiting more than three years for the metro train system to reach Karsiyaka, I have decided that the whole idea must have been a joke. Trees are now growing in the cleared rail lines and the never-used stations are now home to old men who pose as security personnel. I do wonder why the city thought it necessary to close the old train line altogether and leave nothing in its place, except a series of stations and no tracks.

Wacky Turkish Postcards- Strange hands

strange hands postcard

Chosen for its awkward pose of the hands, the mild ambiguity of genders and the cheesy rose. You would think hand-models would, at least, have had a manicure. Maybe the hands on the left belong to a woman that has washed a lot of clothes manually, picked cotton and slapped a lot of donkey behinds. Still, the sentiments are true enough- that beauty is most beautiful when shared.

Paris Sisters-What am I to do

The Paris Sisters were Albeth, Priscilla, and Sherell Paris, a soft voiced sister trio from San Francisco, California. The group was formed in the early '50s. I really like this teddy-bear sound. If you would like to know more about the Paris sisters, here is a link:

Wacky Turkish Postcards- Adja Pekan

Adja

For a person easily charmed by silliness - like me- this postcard was like stumbling on the Mona Lisa in a garage sale. It has a lot to do with the upturned hand. It is the those platform shoes and the pose. Too  much and too strange.

The model is Ajda Pekkan, a singer and actress who has apparently been gulping beer mugs from the fountain of youth since the early 1970s.

Elixirs, face creams,  eating plenty of broccoli  or the blood of virgins may have very little  to do with her well-preserved appearance.  Take a  look at the photos below and view the miracles of cosmetic surgery.

Ayşe Ajda Pekkan (born February 12, 1946 in Istanbul, Turkey) is a Turkish pop music singer and actress. Through a career spanning five decades thus far, Ajda has released more than 20 albums and with Sezen Aksu, is the most commercially successful female Turkish music artist with the sales of over 30 million copies worldwide. She is nicknamed the "Superstar" of Turkish pop music. Although famed for her music, Ajda started her career as an actress with appearances in almost 50 films. During her music career, Ajda has recorded songs in 9 languages. Apart from Turkish, she is also fluent in English and French. She also knows Azerbaijani and Italian.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajda_Pekkan

Late Summer Afternoon in Izmir at Miko

A perfect way to escape the August heat in Izmir is to spend a few hours with a friend in Miko. A glass of white wine or a beer with lively Greek music and just enough people walking by for people watching without feeling dizzy.

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERA

Evenings are crowded so be sure to make a reservations but on most afternoons you should be able to find a table. Years ago, the service used to be terrible and reservations were usually ignored. Today, happily the service has improved and the staff are generally diligent.

Though empty in the afternoons, here is a shot of the interior. On their website, play the clip to see the difference in the evenings. That place is hopping, daddy.

For all you culture vultures, Miko offers a classical music recital on Tuesday  and Thursday evenings. I haven’t been yet so I won’t vouch for it.  Worth checking out, I’d say.

One warning, a first glance at the menu may have you scrambling to your feet.. the management has gone all up-scale- presumably to keep out the riff-raff, like me.  However, I think it isn’t too much to ask to have a few cheaper items on the menu for a light snack in the afternoon.

Wacky Turkish Postcards

Sexism Men Watching Women

In fact, I suspect that this little gem of male chauvinism is probably not Turkish in origin.  I did however find it in Turkey years ago and have regretfully witnessed many such scenes, except the men are less like models and more like street cleaners  and the women are altogether typical. I will skip over the pose.

My reaction was shock, followed by eye-rolling disgust and then, to my surprise, mild amusement at its multi-faceted vulgarity. Ayip bir sey, indeed.

Green Onions- Cherry Wainer and Don Storer

Cherry Wainer and Don Storer play "Green Onions" on German TV show "Beat Beat Beat", July 1st, 1966
I love the expressions on Cherry's face. It is always great to see somebody who enjoys what he/she does. And did you catch the poodle?

When Building Demolitions Go bad

Raw Video: Demolition in Turkey Goes Wrong - Funny video clips are a click away Here is a video making the rounds on the net. It is worth watching because I am sure you have never seen anything quite like it. I am sure those in charge of this demolition project must be scratching their heads. As you can see, the rolling building narrowly missed an apartment block next door. The building was located in Cankiri, Turkey and this former flour factory was built in 1928. This video was shown on the Today show, August 3, 2009.
