Corporate Goliath sues Hacker David: Sony v. George Hotz

On January 11, 2011, Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC (SCEA) initiated a legal action against 21-year-old George Hotz, (alias geohot, million75 or simply mil), and others from an online hacker group called fail0verflow.

DMCA is just a bad law and that it could be passed at all should tell us a thing or two about the land of the free. The Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act is another example of the harm legislatures can do (a challenge to that failed at the SCOTUS, unfortunately). As the article you linked to implies, it will be interesting for the next generations to look back and see the effects of strict/restrictive (nonsensical?) intellectual property legislation. That is, if the US fails to export such legislation.

  2. Lovely comment. Bulent, can you please copy this comment and paste it at the linked site? Your views are important to me and I'd love for my friends at that site to have a chance too.

Nomad, I'd then have to follow that site. Perhaps another time? How about I remove whatever intellectual property rights I have from that piece of text and open it up for you to do whatever you want with it?

If your friends are interested, there's quite a bit available from the techies on this but some of it may look too technical and deter people. I've been away from that environment for a while but I think following Larry Lessig's site/books/talks might be a good start for non-technical people. (Lessig is the lawyer/prof. who lost the copyright extension case/challenge at the supreme court. Here's that story.).
